PSHE

‘Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions.’

The Dalai Lama

At The Oval School, our aim is to ensure that our PSHE provision provides opportunities for the children to achieve their full potential. Our holistic approach to PSHE, has a positive influence on the ethos, learning and relationships in the school and therefore receives the full commitment and involvement of the school community as a whole.

In our school, children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future.  As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes our children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

We are proud to teach Jigsaw PSHE. Jigsaw is a mindful and child-centred approach to PSHE. It is an original and comprehensive scheme of learning, which integrates personal, social, health and economic education with emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and SMSC, especially spiritual development. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

In the Jigsaw scheme, there are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons).

  • Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
  • Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
  • Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
  • Spring 2: Healthy Me
  • Summer 1: Relationships
  • Summer 2: Changing Me (SRE)

Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time allowing for whole school themes and progression. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.

Beyond the Curriculum

We are also committed as a school to our enrichment experiences.

We are currently are a Gold Level Rights Respecting school.

Achieving Gold: Rights Respecting means there is evidence that:

  • Our school has explicitly adopted a child rights approach based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and has embedded it in school policy, practice and culture
  • Children, young people and adults in our school have a thorough understanding of child rights, and rights respecting attitudes and language are embedded across the school
  • RRSA has had a positive impact on children and young people’s learning and wellbeing
  • Students see themselves as rights respecting global citizens and are advocates for social justice, fairness and children’s rights at home and abroad
  • We promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
  • Assemblies / workshops give pupils an opportunity to explore aspects of
SMSC such as NSPCC, West Midland’s police, debate.
  • We regularly fundraise for charities through meaningful focus days.
  • Children know their voice is heard (Article 12) through school council and Rights Respecting Rangers.
  •  In the summer term, we encourage children to take part in an enterprise opportunity.
  • Our school ethos and day-to-day life revolves around our school values.

Our PSHE curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future. They leave our school as well rounded individuals who know that they can make the right choices to have an impact on their future.
