At The Oval School, our aim is to ensure that our PSHE provision provides opportunities for the children to achieve their full potential. Our holistic approach to PSHE, has a positive influence on the ethos, learning and relationships in the school and therefore receives the full commitment and involvement of the school community as a whole.
In our school, children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes our children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
We are proud to teach Jigsaw PSHE. Jigsaw is a mindful and child-centred approach to PSHE. It is an original and comprehensive scheme of learning, which integrates personal, social, health and economic education with emphasis on emotional literacy, mental health and SMSC, especially spiritual development. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
In the Jigsaw scheme, there are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons).
- Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
- Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
- Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
- Spring 2: Healthy Me
- Summer 1: Relationships
- Summer 2: Changing Me (SRE)
Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time allowing for whole school themes and progression. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
